Georgia

Project Overview

The Public International Law & Policy Group is providing legal assistance to the Republic of Georgia as it moves forward with peace negotiations with the region of Abkhazia.

PILPG has provided the Republic of Georgia with legal analysis on matters including  negotiation preparations; post-conflict government structures; the return of internally displaced persons to Abkhazia; comparative analysis with similar conflicts such as Kosovo, Bosnia, Cyprus, and Transnistria; devolution of powers; humanitarian assistance; withdrawal of peacekeeping troops; and Russian influence on the conflict.

To provide this assistance, PILPG has partnered with several law firms including Skadden Arps, Shearman & Sterling, and Steptoe & Johnson.

Project Office

From June to December of 2006 PILPG established a project office in Tbilisi, Georgia to facilitate the provision of legal assistance.  The office was funded by US AID through a sub-contract from AED.
